The Novato Clean Business Program aims to reduce litter in retail areas of the City by asking businesses to sign a pledge to keep the outside of their property (both front and back) litter-free.

If left in the environment, litter can end up in storm drains, in waterways and eventually the ocean. Plastic litter is particularly harmful because most plastic items never fully disappear; they just break down into smaller and smaller pieces (microplastics). According to the United Nations Environment Program millions and millions of tons of plastic have already found their way into our oceans,  presenting a serious threat to all marine life, while also influencing the climate.

As part of the Novato Clean Business Program, participants are asked to sweep the sidewalk in front of their property on a regular basis, keep loading docks, alleyways, and dumpster areas free of debris, provide waste and recycling bins for customers, and educate staff and customers on proper sorting of recyclable and compostable materials. In return, businesses get to display the Novato Clean Business Program window decal like the one below!
