Roadway & Shoulders
The Street Division maintains over 800 streets or 144 miles of roadway, 18 miles of road shoulder and a variety of related structures and facilities within the street easement.  Crews routinely remove and place approximately 1,000 tons of asphalt, 6 tons of crack filler and 50 tons of Class II base rock for various repairs to protect the traveling public, enhance ride quality, and maintain the City's ever increasing inventory of streets. 

Paving
Most asphalt or street repair is accomplished in the summer months and involves several different repair methods, depending on the type and size of failure or overall street condition.  In many cases, the Street Division will remove and replace large sections of roadway to make permanent repairs or apply a thin leveling course to protect the street until permanent repairs can be made. Where cracks in the street have formed, crews use petrolastic crackfiller to fill cracks with hot tar to increase street service life and reduce water intrusion.

Potholing, accomplished in the winter months, is a temporary repair method for vehicle or traffic safety.  Annually approximately 200 tons of temporary asphalt patching materials is used when time does not permit permanent repairs.

Structures and Facilities
In addition to our paving work, the Street Division is responsible for the maintenance and repair of public structures and facilities such as:   sidewalks, curbs and gutters, barricades, benches, trash receptacles, guardrails and fences. We also provide for debris clearance, tree removal and pruning in our easements, creeks and open space.
