Background

In 2009, City staff researched a variety of options for a permanent location for City offices, working with the City Council and the community throughout the process. The City, with the assistance of a commercial construction firm, analyzed a number of buildings and development sites throughout the community. The analysis looked at the costs of the various options and included variables such as building condition, renovation potential, site conditions and construction feasibility.  From January 2005 to September 2013, the City leased office space at 75 Rowland Way for approximately $700,000 a year. Prior to that time, staff occupied multiple buildings at the Civic Center campus on Sherman Avenue. These buildings were determined to be structurally unsound and staff moved to 75 Rowland.

One of the City's strategies to achieve long-term fiscal sustainability was to resolve the location of City offices and eliminate the expensive lease payments. In addition to financial considerations, the City wanted the offices to be centrally-located and to either buy or build a structure that would last for the long-term.

Construction started in August 2012, and the project was substantially complete and City staff moved into 922 Machin Avenue in November 2013. Construction cost was $11M. On May 3, 2014, the City held a dedication ceremony for the building.
