E-Bike Safety
Whether you're riding a moped, minibike, tote-goat, motorized bicycle, e-bike, e-motorcycle or motorcycle, basic rules of the road contained in the California Vehicle Code apply to all and there are laws that define what is safe for riders. Keeping up with the trend is ever-evolving, but safety will always top out at #1 when it comes to our community.
E-bikes may be super fun to ride, but they also carry major risks, compared to traditional bicycles. Per Marin HHS, bike-related 9-1-1 calls have nearly tripled for kids (ages 12–17) between 2017 to 2022 in Marin. We understand that "everyone is getting one" and it's the "hot new thing", but what's "not-so-hot"... is injuries or death related to unsafe driving, especially when it comes to our kids.
Parents/Riders:
- Do your research when it comes to purchasing an e-bike or e-motorcycle. There are certain e-bikes/e-motorcycles that are very dangerous and straight up illegal for kids to ride on.
- Make sure you are compliant with local laws pertaining to the classification.
- Talk to your kids and teenagers about bike safety, pedestrian safety, and the rules of the road BEFORE you hand over the battery or keys. Consequences included.
- We know some e-bikes are pricey and therefore a theft risk, so remember to lock them up when not in use.
