The City of Novato and the Rotary Club of Novato Sunrise are proud to host the third annual “Conversations with Veterans” forum on Saturday, November 7, from 9-10:30am via Zoom.
Too often, our interactions with those in uniform, and with veterans, are limited to a perfunctory “Thank you for your service!”, when we may not know what that service means, or how to have meaningful conversation with a veteran. In honor of Veterans Day, we invite the community to have a dialogue about their military experiences as well as the related responsibility of civilians to support the service of our veterans.
This year, the use of Zoom allows us to invite veterans from outside Novato to bring additional perspective and diversity into the discussion.
“Conversations” brings together Novato resident and Marine Veteran Gene McCandless to discuss his Vietnam experiences with fellow Marine John Musgrave, a poet and writer interviewed extensively in the PBS Series “The Vietnam War.” We will also hear from Army COL (Ret.) Steve Miska about his three combat tours to Iraq and the importance of retaining the experiences of veterans through oral histories and literature.
Novato Mayor Denise Athas and former Rotary Club of Novato Sunrise President Sylvia Barry will co-host, and Gil Sanborn, Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army, will serve as Moderator.
