Hometown Heroes Celebrated in Downtown Novato

Post Date:06/27/2018 3:00 PM

Photo of Novato Proud Banner in Downtown NovatoIf you've been to Grant Avenue in Downtown Novato recently, you may have noticed the faces of some of our community's Hometown Heroes. City staff recently installed banners on the lamp posts along Grant Avenue featuring portraits of service men and women who live and work in Novato.

The banners are part of Novato Proud, a civic initiative highlighting notable people and innovative businesses who call Novato home. No one deserves our hometown pride more than those who have served our country. They lead by example, make good neighbors, and often commit themselves to volunteering within the community.

To mark Veterans Day last year, we invited local veterans and those in active service to participate in photo sessions to be featured in the new Hometown Heroes gallery on our Novato Proud website. This May, we reached out to the community with a call for veterans to be included in the Novato Proud gallery and on lamp posts throughout downtown. The lamp post banners, designed and produced by local Novato businesses Kiosk and Centric Signs, were installed on Grant Avenue prior to Memorial Day and will stay up through Veterans Day. These banners will be displayed each year from May through November.

The feedback we've received has been overwhelmingly positive, as the campaign shines a light on individuals who deserve recognition for their service in times of turmoil and conflict. Veterans from five branches of the United States military are represented: Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard. These men and women are our neighbors and friends, and they contribute to what makes Novato a vibrant community.

To learn more or to nominate a Novato veteran, community member or business who should be recognized by the Novato Proud initiative, visit novato.org/novatoproud.

As we head towards the 4th of July, we respectfully offer a salute to our service men and women to thank them for all that they have done, and to remind them how much pride they bring to our Novato community.
