On May 10 at 7 p.m., the San Rafael and the Novato City Councils held a joint study session to discuss SMART Quiet Zones, including community outreach and the timing of the Quiet Zone establishment. This joint session follows the City of San Rafael’s filing of a Notice of Establishment on April 20. The Quiet Zone can be established no earlier than 21-days after this filing.

Following the joint session, the San Rafael City Council met and discussed the timing of the Quiet Zone implementation, and voted to request approval for the start of the Quiet Zone for San Rafael, Novato, and Marin County as soon as possible. Staff will be contacting the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) to request that approval which could allow the Quiet Zones to "go live" within the week.

Additionally, SMART announced at the meeting that they will begin testing its service schedule beginning this Friday as part of its next phase of systemwide testing. SMART’s service schedule testing involves running about 30 train trips per day on weekdays, and 10 on the weekends. Testing will continue for the next few weeks.

As SMART moves closer to the opening of passenger service, the public should  be cautious near all railroad crossings and tracks. As jurisdictions begin establishing Quiet Zones, please be aware that you may not hear train horns at railroad crossings.

For your safety, please STAY OFF THE TRACKS and always be alert and aware around all railroad tracks and crossings.

For more information on rail safety, visit the SMART safety web page at: www.BeTrackSmart.org.
